Tea tree oil is
extracted from Melaleuca alternifolia in Australia, and, commercial
plantations began to produce large quantities of tea tree oil from
Melaleuca species during the 20th
century. The tea tree is a small evergreen that likes warm climate. It
is attractive and fragrant, with an exotic look. Herbalists swear by tea
tree oil, made from its foliage.
Tea tree oil also
known as melaleuca oil contains antibiotic, antimicrobial, antifungal,
antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties and is often used
to help battle a bacterial infection such as athlete’s foot. It has the
ability to stimulate the immune system and helps to ease your cough
reduce the duration of a cough. Traditional usage suggests that tea tree
oil is a treatment for superficial wounds, insect bites and athlete's
foot.
One of the most effective ways to use it is to
blend it with other oils and massage into the chest to provide relief
for a cough, cold or sore throat. Diluted with carrier oil and applied
with clean cotton swab it has an antiviral effect for treating a cold
sore.
