Essential oils are made up of chemicals that give a plant its flavour and scent and these oils are extracted from the plant via distillation or cold-pressing and can be used in small quantities for therapeutic reasons. The chemicals found in thyme oil have been found to have a wide variety of health benefits and has powerful antibacterial and antiviral abilities against common antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.

 In this context thyme essential oil can fight a fever, is effective in treating bacterial infections and was used throughout Europe to help fight the Black Plague. Thyme essential oil also reduces muscle spasms, can prevent coughing, which sometimes causes a sore throat.

Thymol is the most prevalent chemical in thyme oil and as a consequence thyme offers antiviral, antimicrobial properties and also has the ability to relieve stress and acts as an antidepressant, all of which come together to make it ideal for fighting off cold systems.
