Wild Carrot or daucus carota is shaped like an up-turned umbrella and is also known as Bishop’s Lace, Queen Anne’s lace because the leaves divided with narrow feathery leaflets, with fine hairs that smell like carrots.  Wild carrot is native to regions of Europe and southwest Asia, is a hardy biennial, so lives only 2 years, thus never forms a big root mass like daisies or other perennial wildflowers and flowers from June to September and grows up to 1 meter tall. Wild carrot can be found growing on grassland, roadsides and in hedge rows and can be identified by its hairy stem. The creamy white flowers are tinged with pink before opening. The outer florets are larger than the inner ones, and the central flower has a single red bloom in its centre to attract insects. It is said that the single coloured floret tricks flying insects into thinking that a bug is already sitting on the flower and thereby help pollinate the plant.The flowers grow on erect ridged stems. The flowers are pollinated by bees, flies and beetles.

The fruits are oval and ripen in August/September and the whitish small and spindle shaped roots are edible when young, but the wild carrot's root is tough and stringy and not particularly palatable. The Domesticated orange coloured carrot we eat today was developed during the 17th century, and subspecies of daucus carota.

It is possible that ancient cultures wild carrot was used as an herb, and that the seeds were used medicinally. As the seeds are high in volatile oil, some find them soothing to the digestive system, useful for colic and flatulence.

Wild Carrot seed oil is known for its antiseptic and antioxidants properties which act as stimulants for curing open wounds, sores, ulcers, rashes, and skin infections. It can work on viral infections that occur in the respiratory tract due to the presence of vitamin A. It is beneficial in treating bronchitis and other viral infections such as, flu, coughs, and colds.

Carrot seed oil should not be confused with carrot oil which is made from crushed carrot roots and can be used for culinary purposes. As an essential oil, carrot seed oil is intended for external use only. Carrot seed oil is generally considered safe if used externally. With that being said, you should never apply undiluted carrot seed oil to the skin as it may cause redness, rash, and burning sensations. Prior to using carrot seed oil, always test the diluted oil on a small patch of skin and wait overnight to see if is any reaction occurs. oil should not be used if you are taking certain antibiotics or eye drops and should not be used during pregnancy. Carrot seed oil should not be used on children as they have sensitive skin, which can sometimes cause allergic reactions in their bodies. Using carrot seed oil on people who have epilepsy and asthma must also be avoid, as it is a potent stimulant and trigger severe reactions.
