Wild Carrot or daucus
carota is shaped like an up-turned umbrella and is also known as
Bishop’s Lace, Queen Anne’s lace because the leaves divided with narrow
feathery leaflets, with fine hairs that smell like carrots.
Wild
carrot is native to regions of Europe and southwest Asia, is a hardy
biennial, so lives only 2 years, thus never forms a big root mass like
daisies or other perennial wildflowers and flowers from June to
September and grows up to 1 meter tall. Wild carrot can be found growing
on grassland, roadsides and in hedge rows and can be identified by its
hairy stem. The creamy white flowers are tinged with pink before
opening. The outer florets are larger than the inner ones, and the
central flower has a single red bloom in its centre to attract insects.
It is said that the single coloured floret tricks flying insects into
thinking that a bug is already sitting on the flower and thereby help
pollinate the plant. The flowers grow on erect ridged
stems. The flowers are pollinated by bees, flies and beetles.
The
fruits are oval and ripen in August/September and the whitish small and
spindle shaped roots are edible when young, but the wild carrot's root
is tough and stringy and not particularly palatable. The Domesticated
orange coloured carrot we eat today was developed during the 17th
century, and subspecies of daucus carota.
It is possible that ancient cultures wild carrot
was used as an herb, and that the seeds were used medicinally. As the
seeds are high in volatile oil, some find them soothing to the digestive
system, useful for colic and flatulence.
